We are dedicated to improving the lives of children in foster care and creating meaningful support for the families who care for them. Because of the support of our community, we are able to provide essential resources, memorable experiences, and ongoing programs that bring hope, comfort, and joy to children in foster care. We are deeply grateful for every individual, family, and organization that partners with us to help make a lasting difference in these children’s lives.
Our Mission:
Downriver Foster Closet is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children in foster care as they transition into new homes and life circumstances. Our mission is to help foster children rebuild their confidence, strengthen their sense of self-worth, and provide comfort and stability during times of change.
We provide essential items at no cost to children entering or currently in foster care, including new and gently used clothing, socks, underwear, shoes, suitcases, and other everyday necessities. By helping meet these immediate needs, we aim to ease the transition for children while also relieving some of the financial and emotional pressures often faced by foster families.
What began as an effort to support foster parents has continued to grow, allowing us to extend assistance to birth families and others connected to the foster care community. Through the generosity of our supporters and the strength of our community partnerships, we strive to provide encouragement, resources, and meaningful support to children and families involved in the foster care system.
Our goal is to bring the community together to uplift, assist, and advocate for foster children and the families who care for them in every way possible.

Our mission is to help ease the burden on families while bringing comfort and confidence to the children we serve.

In addition to providing essential resources, we proudly organize programs and events that create joy, memories, and a sense of belonging for children in foster care. From holiday assistance and birthday celebrations to school supply drives, special outings, and community events, we strive to give every child opportunities to simply enjoy being a kid and feel celebrated by their community.

What began as a small effort by foster parents to help others in the community has grown into a mission fueled by compassion and support from countless volunteers, donors, and local partners. Together, we are creating a stronger support system for foster children, foster families, and birth families alike.
